Meralco ready to power up SEA Games

Pangilinan-led power distributor Manila Electric Company (Meralco) is now ready to energize New Clark City ahead of the Philippines 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

In a chance interview with reporters recently, Meralco PowerGen Corporation president and chief executive officer Rogelio Singson said the group is “now ready to connect.”

“Together with our partner Marubeni Corp., we are ready to connect,” he said.

The SEA Games will be hosted by the Philippines from 30 November to 11 December 2019.

Singson said the group is just waiting for the go-signal from property developers in New Clark City in Pampanga before an interconnection is made.

“Unfortunately, there are just interconnection requirements from our line to the users, to the building, it’s called the last mile and that is going to be done by the developer and the building construction,” he said.

A consortium called Meralco-Marubeni, composed of Meralco, Marubeni, The Kansai Electric Power Co. Inc. and Chubu Electric Power Co. Inc., bagged the power supply deal for the 9,450-hectare New Clark City on 18 January 2019.

This after the consortium submitted a lower tariff offer of P0.6188 per kilowatt hour (kWh), as compared with the Aboitiz-Kepco consortium’s P0.9888 per kWh.

The New Clark City is a planned community located in Capas, Tarlac, which will feature residential, retail, and office spaces, and is said to be able to accommodate 1.2 million people. It is being managed by the Bases Conversion and Development Authority.
