What now for Tanya Markova?

If there’s one major change the members of Tanya Markova have observed since their formation back in 2010, it is that they got fatter.

Their answer may sound absurd, nonsensical even, but their replies encapsulate a certain wit distinct to Tanya Markova which is also the very same charm that made them rise to the top.

Known for wearing makeup and costumes onstage, the band paved their own way with their own genre, “shock pop,” which can be defined as melodic songs toying on ghoulish subjects.

Their relatable and often funny lyrics also combine everyday scenes with pop culture references, “childish ramblings,” local folklore and taboo subjects.

Now marking their ninth year in the industry, Tanya Markova recently released two singles entitled “Iglap” and “Stranded.”

“Iglap” is about the goodbyes and acceptance, while “Stranded” sings about the pain of being stuck in a heartache.

Quoting a review of “Stranded” by the Flying Lugaw: “The very simplicity of the sound allows for the songwriting to take center stage. Humbly presenting one of the strongest choruses of any single this year, the three-part hook effortlessly summarizes the spirit of the track, becoming a song in and of itself.”

Its lyrics don’t feel like a compromise to the hugot-filled OPM scene though, but feels more like their way of adapting to today’s music landscape.

These latest tracks are a predecessor to the band’s third album, set to be released next year.

They also celebrated their anniversary last 5 October in 70s Bistro where they played with several bands under Tower of Doom and released their exclusive merchandise.
