Electrical fire downs LRT-2 service

Operations of the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) were suspended yesterday morning after an electrical fire sparked in its power supply transformers.

Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) spokesman Atty. Hernando Cabrera said rectifier substations nos. 5 and 6 located between Katipunan and Anonas stations tripped and caught fire.

The blaze was contained as of 12:30 p.m.

“We stopped full line operations at 11:33 a.m.,” Cabrera said.

Authorities are now investigating the cause of the tripping.

LRTA administrator Gen. Reynaldo Berroya apologized to affected passengers for the inconvenience the incident has caused and ensures that all efforts will be exhausted for a possible implementation of degraded operations from Anonas or Cubao to Recto and vice versa tomorrow.

“Our primary concern now is to determine the extent of the damage so as to ascertain the integrity, stability, and safety of LRTA structures and facilities,” Berroya said.
