LRT-2 delays limited operation

Lawyer Hernando Cabrera, LRT-2 spokesperson, reported Thursday that fire broke out at the Katipunan station following a loud explosion.

The Light Rail Transit-2 may operate train service only between Recto and Cubao or Anonas station starting Friday pending the restoration of two rectifier substations damaged by fire on Thursday morning.

“Our primary concern now is to determine the extent of the damage so as to ascertain the integrity, stability, and safety of LRTA structures and facilities,” LRTA Administrator Gen. Reyna Berroya said in a statement.

“The LRTA Administrator also sincerely apologizes to the affected passengers for the inconvenience the incident has caused and ensures that all efforts will be exhausted for a possible implementation of degraded operations from Anonas or Cubao to Recto and vice versa tomorrow,” said Berroya.

The LRTA blamed the fire that was seen along the carriageway between Anonas and Katipunan stations to the tripping off of the rectifier substation (RSS 5) located at Katipunan station. RSS 6 located at Santolan depot was also affected and power was cut off at the two stations.

Berroya immediately ordered an investigation on the cause of the fire and to assess the necessary actions to be undertaken under the circumstances.

LRTA decided not to resume operation of the LRT-2 Thursday as its engineering and maintenance team conduct safety inspections on the condition of the remaining rectifier substations at the revenue line.

No one was reported hurt at the Katipunan station during the explosion and train commuters were herded out for safety.
