Perasol seeks UP support

I coach not only for myself or for my players, but for the members of the entire UP community.

Embattled University of the Philippines (UP) head coach Bo Perasol urged the UP community to rally behind the Fighting Maroons following their dismal 63-89 loss to Ateneo de Manila University in Season 82 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tournament late Sunday.

In a statement, Perasol said he was apologetic with their loss, especially with his massive meltdown that could result to a suspension.

“It’s time that we realize that we all, players or supporters, should pick up the pieces when we lose and not beat each other up to pieces when we do not come out victorious,” he said.

“We have to be behind each other, come what may, through thick or thin, rather than be at each other’s throat when we lose by one point or 26 points.”

“I coach not only for myself or for my players, but for the members of the entire UP community who were watching the game live or at home. I know that if I do not deliver now and go all the way in Season 82, then I have no business being at the bench of the UP Maroons any longer.”

Perasol was ejected at 6:23 mark of the third period after protesting a non-call on UP backup center Jerson Prado, whom he thought was fouled by Blue Eagles big man Ange Kouame.

Perasol stormed into the court with a closed fist and confronted referee Jamie Rivano before players and staff restrained him.

League commissioner Jensen Ilagan promised to come out with the decision soon as his technical team is still in the process of reviewing the incident.

No announcement has been made at press time.

“Hopefully, by the end of the day, we get the materials. And hopefully, we’ll issue a suspension, if there’s any,” said Ilagan, adding that Perasol will no longer be summoned by his office.

“There’s no need to summon him (Perasol) as the process of the suspension includes a chance for an appeal.”
