Building demolition kills 2

Sogo Hotel was being torn down to make way for a new development.

Two workers were confirmed dead while another was hurt when a concrete beam and wall collapsed during yesterday’s demolition work undertaken at the Sogo Hotel building in Malate, Manila.

The victims were identified as Jason Fabello, who was recovered at 3:30 p.m. after being pinned down by a concrete beam, and Melo Yson, who has yet to be retrieved from the rubble as of presstime. They were brothers.

They were seen through a drone camera still alive, but a few hours after they were taken from the site this afternoon, they were already lifeless.

On the other hand, injured was Edson Yson, who was rescued by the MRRDO and was brought to the nearby Ospital ng Maynila where he underwent treatment for a broken arm.

Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso rushed to the scene of the accident after he was informed about it.

It was learned that the demolition order was issued to tear down the old six-floor Sogo Hotel building, which started on 2 August, to pave the way for the construction of a new building.

Domagoso ordered that the demolition activity be halted pending an investigation by the City Engineering Office.
