Alonso belts homer record

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Pete Alonso smacked his 49th home run of the Major League Baseball (MLB) season Wednesday as the New York Mets rallied for a much-needed 7-4 victory over the Rockies in Colorado.

Alonso’s sixth-inning solo homer was the Mets’ 225th of the season, surpassing the previous club record of 224 set in 2017.

The Mets became the 10th team to break a franchise home run record this season and six other clubs are on pace to set club records before the campaign ends.

Overall, the major league record for homers in a season has already fallen.

Alonso also featured in the Mets’ ninth-inning rally, drawing a four-pitch, bases-loaded go-ahead walk off Rockies relief pitcher Joe Harvey.

The Mets trailed, 3-4, going into the ninth but knotted the score on Brandon Nimmo’s single.

Mets pitcher Seth Lugo also singled in a run in between tossing two scoreless innings.

The Mets, trying to keep their wild card playoff hopes alive, improved to 79-73.

Alonso, meanwhile, remained on pace to match, if not break, New York Yankees star Aaron Judge’s record for most home runs by a rookie — 52 set in 2017.
