Haze hits Metro Cebu, public warned

Metro Cebu is currently experiencing hazy sky due to the smoke coming from the forest fire in Indonesia and monsoon clouds.

The Department of Natural Resources (DENR) Region 7 warned residents the air pollution poses health risks such as respiratory tract infections and cardiac ailments.

As of Wednesday 8 a.m., real time monitoring data for PM 2.5 showed a reading of 56 micrograms per normal cubic meter which is above the safe guideline value of 50 micrograms per normal cubic meter.

PM 2.5 is a particulate matter or a dust particle measuring 2.5 micrometers in diameter.

Due to its size, PM 2.5 tend to stay longer in the air than heavier particles thus increasing the chances of humans and animals inhaling it deep into the lungs which can cause diseases, the DENR said.

DENR advised the public to wear personal protective equipment such as dust mask or eye goggles to protect yourself from air pollutants. It also advised residents to stay indoors if they have nothing to do outside.
