Fishing in Marikina River banned

The local government of Marikina City on Friday temporarily banned fishing and other water-related activities in its river after pig carcasses were found floating in it on Thursday.

The Marikina City Veterinary Office said the dead pigs were from neighboring towns in Rizal and were carried by strong current to Marikina River near Bayabas Street in Barangay Nangka.

City officials also asked the Department of Agriculture (DA) to investigate the incident.

DA Sec. William Dar said the floating dead pigs is giving impression that African swine fever is spreading in the country.
