Record-breaking attendance at House

A record-high average of 247 representatives were present for session from the opening of 18th Congress on 22 July until 22 September, the House reported on Wednesday.

House Deputy Speaker Neptali Gonzales II said the “historic” and “unsurpassed” attendance reflects the discipline of his colleagues.

“I have been a member of several Congresses and I am truly elated by the record attendance of House members of the 18th Congress led by Speaker [Alan Peter] Cayetano,” said Gonzales.

“The high attendance of our colleagues reflects their discipline, hard work, deep passion and great interest to serve the people and enact priority laws that will give them a safe and comfortable life,” he added.

Gonzales noted that despite the spate of holidays last month, lawmakers chose to attend to their congressional work instead of going on extended break.

He said 266 attendees were recorded last 13 August, which was the day after the observance of Eid al-Adha Day, and 259 attendees on 27 August, a day after the celebration of National Heroes Day.

House Minority Leader Bienvenido “Benny” Abante Jr. said the minority views with optimism the “sterling” attendance record of House members.

“Like our counterparts in the majority, we share their desire to contribute to the productivity of Congress—and the consistent presence and active participation of Minority members in House sessions, committee hearings, and briefings reflect the commitment to do our part to pass meaningful legislation in the next few years,” Abante said.

Abante, however, reminded lawmakers that they will not be judged by attendance alone.

“Let us be mindful, however, that history will judge us not by mere attendance alone, but by our actions within the halls of Congress,” he said.

“Ultimately, our contributions as public servants will be evaluated not only on the basis of our attendance records, but on the positive impact of the legislation we pass,” Abante added.
