UST seizes solo lead

University of Santo Tomas (UST) used a late-game rally to shock University of the Philippines (UP), 85-69, and grab the solo lead in the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 82 men’s basketball tournament Saturday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Growling Tigers dealt the Fighting Maroons their first loss of the season through a stellar night from newcomer Beninese center Soulmane Chabi Yo, who scored 18 points and same number of rebounds.

Rookie guard Mark Nonoy added 16 markers, five boards and two assists for the Espana-based team.

“We came prepared,” UST head coach Aldin Ayo said as the Growling Tigers improved to 2-0.

“I have to commend the players because they played well. I also have to give credi to my coaching staff,” he added.

Reigning MVP Bright Akhueti had 19 points and 16 boards to pace the Fighting Maroons, who dropped to 1-1.
