Medina fuels Lady Sea Lions

San Beda University (SBU) continued its domination in the second day of the swimming competition of Season 95 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Sta. Rosa Multi Purpose Complex in Sta. Rosa City, Laguna.

Reigning Most Valuable Player (MVP) Chloe Medina nailed her fourth gold medal for the Lady Sea Lions after ruling the 200-meter backstroke with the time of two minutes and 30.35 seconds, beating her 2017 record of 2:31.92.

“I did not expect to beat my own record,” said the 20-year old Medina in Filipino as she beat SBU teammate Kim Karen Ambong (2:34.71) and Justin Anne Abastillas of College of Saint Benilde (CSB) (2:35.76), who settled for silver and bronze, respectively.

“This is my last year and I just hope to stay unbeaten,” added Medina, who also clinched three golds in 200-m individual medley (IM), 50-m backstroke, and 200-m medley relay in Day 1 of the pool competition.

The Sea Lions now move closer for an eight straight overall crown after collecting 17 gold medal, resulting to 569.5 and 718.5 points for men’s and women’s, respectively.

Also contributing to the haul of SBU were Sophia Bulanhagui (400-m IM), Gwen Brynne Prejula (100-m fly), Gwyneth Amber Cawaling et al (400-m free relay), Jason Villaruz (400-m IM), Fritz Rodriguez (50-m breast) and John Henry Gurango (100-m fly).

St. Benilde drew golden performances from Aziz Jan Pukunum (200-m back and 400-m free relay) and Mary Joy Bayaga (50-m breast) to rank second in the overall standings with with 461.5 and 365 points for men’s and women’s division, respectively.

CSB is leading in the juniors division with 572 points courtesy of last year’s MVP Ted Jacob Laminta (400-m IM and 400-m free relay), Andrei Vaughn Aquino (50-m breast) and Ryan Emmanuel Suarez (100-m fly).

San Beda is second with 412 points with Gian Karl De Guzman copping a gold in the 200-m backstroke event.
