Angola frustrates Gilas, 84-81

Angola took the fight out of the Gilas Pilipinas in overtime en route to humbling the Filipinos, 84-81, in Group D of the FIBA World Cup in Foshan, China on Wednesday, 4 September 2019.

It was a sorry loss for the Filipinos who clawed back from a 12-point deficit in the last quarter after trailing for three quarters and tied the game on CJ Perez’s three-point shot with 33.1 seconds left in regulation time.

Gilas had a chance to win the game but Perez missed another trey with 5.2 seconds remaining that sent the game to overtime.

The Filipinos led in the first minute and a half of the extension period, 76-75, but it was the Angolans’ turn to rally with a 7-2 run capped by Reggie Moore’s trey at the 3 minute mark.

Yanick Moreira padded Angola’s lead, 82-78, on a basket with 1:07 left in overtime and Perez turned over the ball with an offensive foul on Gerson Domingos, who split his freethrows to give the African team a 5-point cushion, 83-78, with 31.3 seconds left.

Roger Pogoy sank a three-pointer with 24.2 seconds left to cut the deficit by two, 83-81, but Andrey Blatche was forced to stop the clock by fouling with 7.7 seconds remaining.

Another Angola split from the freethrow line assured the Africans’ first and only win in Group D that also closed out the Filipinos’ campaign in the FIBA World Cup with a sorry zero win record after 3 games.

Gilas has two games in the classification phase of the tournament.
