Batanes under Signal No. 1 due to ‘Liwayway’

Batanes is still under tropical cyclone wind signal no.1 as Tropical Storm “Liwaywa” continues to gather strength, the weather state bureau reported Tuesday.

As of 4 a.m., the weather disturbance was last seen 255 kilometers east of Calayan, Cagayan and is now packing maximum winds of 85 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness up to 105 kph. It is moving north northwest at 20 kph.

Liwayway is not expected to make landfall but its trough will bring light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains over Apayao, Cagayan, including Babuyan Islands, and Batanes.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon or habagat will trigger scattered light to moderate rains with at times heavy rain showers over Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Panay Island, Guimaras and the rest of Cordillera Administrative Region.

PAGASA expects the tropical storm to exit the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) either Wednesday or Thursday.
