Duterte slams Iceland over abortion policy

President Duterte lambasted Iceland anew, this time over its abortion policy.

After the previous attempt of Iceland to have alleged extrajudicial killings in the Philippines investigated by the United Nations, it is the Nordic island nation’s abortion law that President Rodrigo Duterte lashed at.

The President said Iceland, instead of worrying about drug pushers who cause “social dysfunction,” should rethink its “slaughter” of unborn babies.

“Do you know that in Iceland they allow abortion up to six months? You have one more month and you have the principle of intrauterine life that if you give birth at six months the baby will survive,” the President said in his speech at the 31st anniversary of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program in Quezon City.

“Itong Iceland, palibhasa ice ang kain wala namang tubig ‘yan eh,” he said. ”Pagka walanghiya, tapos tinuturuan ako kung ano ang gawin ko. I am sorry for you. That’s why you’re condemned there in the ice forever. I hope you will freeze in time.”

Voting 40 for and 18 against last May, the Icelandic parliament legalized the termination of a pregnancy within the first 22 weeks regardless of circumstances. Abortion was previously legal after the 16th week but only after the approval of a committee. The decision is now solely the mother’s.
