DepEd chief favors “no homework” policy

Education Secretary Leonor Briones is all for the proposed “no homework” bill for Kindergarten students up to Grade 12.

Briones said homeworks are additional burdens for students and after-school hours should be free from activities.

“Mayroon tayong policy na dini-discourage natin ang homework, alam naman natin na minsan hindi naman ang bata ang gumagawa. Nawawalan kung minsan ng panahon ang bata at parents, mga friends na mag-bonding,” Briones said.

Two separate versions of the bill were filed in Congress―Quezon City Rep. Alfred Vargas’ House Bill 388 or “No Homework on Weekends Act of 2019″ and House Deputy Speaker Evelina Escudero’s House Bill 3611.

House Bill 388 seeks to ban elementary and high schools teachers from giving homework or assignments over the weekend while HB 3611 promotes a no-homework policy for kinder to grade 12 pupils and barring textbooks from being taken out of schools for kinder to grade 6 students in all public and private schools.
