Digong likely skipping EDSA rites

After his no-show in the two previous commemorations of the People Power Revolution of 1986, President Rodrigo Duterte is most likely to again skip its 33rd anniversary celebration next week, Malacañang bared on Wednesday.

Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the Chief Executive may opt to just “prioritize work.”

“There is no word yet. He hasn’t attended for two years, so most likely he will not attend this one since he has a lot of work pending,” he told Palace reporters.

However, Panelo clarified that Mr. Duterte still recognizes the event as “important,” noting the President issued statements in the past recalling how Filipinos banded together in the bloodless revolution 33 years ago to oust a dictator from power.

“I remember he issued a statement. So, it’s important,” expressed Panelo.

The spokesman also said the President’s decision to skip the EDSA celebration rites has something to do with his close relationship with the Marcos family.

“He really just has a lot of work to do,” Panelo insisted.

The senatorial bid of one of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos’ daughters and incumbent Ilocos Norte governor Imee Marcos for the May elections was endorsed by Mr. Duterte.
