The remains of the ill-fated Filipino couple who drowned during their honeymoon in Maldives have arrived in the country.

According to the Manila International Airport Authority, the remains of Leomer Lagradilla and Erica Joyce arrived in the country on an Etihad flight at about 3:30 p.m.

The couple, who were married only last December, were on their honeymoon in a resort on Dhiffushi Island in Maldives when tragedy struck them on 13 January.

Reports indicated they were snorkeling when they drowned. Rescuers tried to save the couple but they were pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Last week, Department of Foreign Affairs officials met with the father of Leomer. He later said DFA Secretary Teddy Locsin Jr. assured them the agency will shoulder the expenses for the repatriation of the couples’ remains.

Meanwhile, authorities in Maldives said they will soon establish safe zones for swimming on every island following the drowning of a newlywed Filipino couple, Maldives Tourism Minister Ali Waheed said in an online report.

The minister said authorities will work together with island councils toward to ensure Maldives would be a safe travel destination.
