De Castro is new chief justice

Associate Justice Teresita de Castro Supreme Court Associate Justice Teresita Leonardo-De Castro is the new Chief Justice, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra announced on Saturday.

De Castro was among the three SC justices in the shortlist submitted by the Judicial and Bar Council to President Rodrigo Duterte. The other two are Diosdado Peralta and Lucas Bersamin.

The JBC voted the three to be in the shortlist out of six applicants, including Justice Andres Reyes, Jr. and Tagum City, Davao del Norte Branch 1 Presiding Judge Virginia Tehano-Ang.

De Castro and Peralta each got six votes from the JBC and Bersamin got five.
