Garments, leather sectors pushed

The government plans to reinvigorate the country’s garments and footwear manufacturing sectors, link the domestic players to global players and boost their value chain down the line.

This was learned from Trade Undersecretary and Board of Investment Managing Director Ceferino Rodolfo who said there is an ongoing bid to recapture markets lost in the past when more competitive foreign players dominated markets.

“If you really want to generate employment, we have to really target this sector,” said Rodolfo, adding the garments industry is one of two lucrative job-generating industries in the country along with food processing.

The official made the statement as he announced the hosting of the first Philippine Garment, Leather Goods Industries, and Fabrics Expo from 23 to 26 August at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City showcasing the opportunities in the sector.

The fabric expo aims to highlight the capabilities of Philippine garments and wearables exporters to produce high-quality products for global brands.
