Alas thumbs up for Abueva

Phoenix head coach Louie Alex is thrilled with the addition of the Calvin Abueva to his team following a blockbuster trade with Alaska in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) on Tuesday.

Aware of Abueva’s capability being the former Aces deputy and Letran mentor in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the veteran coach Alas is confident he can get the full potential out of the fiery cager dubbed as ‘The Beast’.

Abueva, 30, was shipped to Phoenix two days ago in exchange for guard Karl Dehesa and a 2019 first round pick, according to a trade approved by the PBA on the same day.

“Well, Calvin is Calvin. Wherever he plays, his impact will be huge,” said Alas in an exclusive interview with the Daily Tribune.

“We all know how relentless he is. He’s a great addition to us.”

As Abueva’s former coach in Alaska and a former opponent in the NCAA as the Knights head coach, Alas believes he will encounter no problem meshing the former collegiate Most Valuable Player out of San Sebastian College-Recoletos into his system.

“The amount of adjustment will be short. We’ve been playing against each other and together both in NCAA and Alaska. My scouting report for Calvin is that long already,” Alas said.

Interestingly, Abueva will also get to reunite with former Stags coach Topex Robinson who now serves as Alas’ top deputy in the Fuel Masters.

Alas, together with Robinson, spent a long time serving as assistant coaches to Alex Compton in the Alaska camp.

Aside from young guns Wright and Perkins, Abueva will also join veterans Willie Wilson, Doug Kramer, JC Intal and RJ Jazul in Phoenix’s bid for a first playoff appearance under mentor Alas.
