Car stereo thief shot dead

Stealing a car stereo proved to be the last act of a suspected “basag kotse” robber as he ended up dead in a shootout with police at dawn Tuesday in Tagaytay City.

Members of the Maitim II East Police Community Precinct were alerted by victim Marie Jean Cacayuran Ancheta, 51, after discovering that the stereo inside her white Mitsubishi Adventure with plate number XAK 372 was missing after it was parked overnight along the road. The right side window of the car was also broken.

The police hunted the suspect in the neighborhood and chanced upon him along Vilbay Street in Barangay Maitim II at 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, city chief of police, Supt. Elmer Decena, said.

The suspect resisted arrest and fired at the officers, who fired back and killed him.
