Gold seized from Chinese cops

Bureau of Customs (BoC) officials announced yesterday the confiscation of assorted gold bars, bracelets and coins from two Chinese policemen who hand-carried them at terminal 2 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) over the weekend.

The gold items weighed about two kilos, according to BoC personnel who identified the Chinese policemen as Yang Jie and Shi Senlin.

The two cops were escorting back to China eight Chinese fugitives who were ordered deported after being arrested for maintaining an illegal online gambling operation in the Philippines.

The gold items are property of the Chinese government because they had been confiscated from one of the deportees, said the Chinese policemen.

BoC duty supervisor Charlon Tejada said that while they seized the items, they nonetheless issued “Held Baggage Receipts” for them.

Tejada asked the Chinese cops to secure a permit from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas so they can bring back to China the gold items.

The BoC officer said the confiscated gold — four bars, six bracelets and nine coins — showed up during the initial X-ray screening, placed inside a box.
