Mayor’s house, police office attacked

Two men were wounded in grenade attacks on a mayor’s house and police office in Sultan Kudarat on Saturday morning, according to reports.

Lambayong town Councilor Carlos Abalos and his cousin, Richard Abalos suffered minor injuries when two suspects on a motorcycle hurled a grenade inside the residential compound of Mayor Ramon Abalos in Purok Pag-asa, Barangay Poblacion around 6:45 a.m.

The victims were immediately brought to a hospital in Tacurong City, some five kilometers from Lambayong.

The attackers then drove to the compound of the Lambayong municipal police office and tossed another grenade there. No one was hurt in the attack.

The Abaloses were having coffee at the mayor’s house when bonnet-wearing suspects zipped by and lobbed a hand grenade that landed beside the mayor’s vehicle.

Mayor Abalos believes that personalities involved in illegal narcotics were behind the attacks, attributing the incident to his all-out campaign against the proliferation of illegal drugs in the area.

A manhunt of the suspects, believed to be from the outlawed Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, has been launched.

“The Army’s 1st Mechanized Infantry Brigade in the Tacurong area has been ordered to coordinate with the police to run after the attackers,” PNA quoted Capt. Arvin John Encinas, 6ID spokesperson, as saying.
