South African kayoes Dacquel

Filipino Rene “Commander” Dacquel lost to hometown hero Yanga Sigqibo via a split decision for the World Boxing Council International super flyweight title fight held July 27 at the International Convention Center in East London, South Africa.

Dacquel (20-8-2) sent Sigqibo down the canvass twice during the fight but still lost on points.

Results of the fight were relayed by Edmond Lapitan Dellosa, a boxing official of the Atletang Pinoy-Laban Para sa Bayan who is in South Africa with matchmaker Art Monis.

Sigqibo now has an 11-1-1 record, three of them by knockouts .

It was the fourth straight loss by Dacquel in his career from from 2016, the last was against Andrew Moloney last February 24 in Australia. He has now eight losses in total.

On August 9, another Filipino pug in Alvin Lagumbay will make his first title defense in a rematch with Japanese Keitha Obara at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan for the World Boxing Organization’s Oriental welterweight title.

On August 28, Pedro Taduran, Jr. will fight as challenger for the WBC minimumweight title in Bangkok, Thailand and on Sept. 29, Michael Dasmarinas (28-2-0) will be fighting in Singapore against Manyo Plange (17-0-0, 15KO’s) of Ghana, Africa.
