Fire guts 110 houses in Cebu City

A total 110 houses were gutted by fire in at least two sitios at Barangay Kinasang-an, late Friday evening rendering nearly 900 people homeless.

Firefighters received an alarm and call at around 10 p.m. Friday and the fire reached Task Force Alpha, according to the Cebu City Fire Department (CCFD).

The fire spread quickly as the houses were made of light materials, fire officials said.

They also had a hard time trying to reach the places due to the narrow streets.

The fire was declared under control at 1 a.m. Saturday.

Chief Insp. Noel Ababon, fire marshal of the area, said the fire started from the house of a resident named Elvisa Baby Flores.

An unattended candle was suspected of causing the fire as the house had no electricity and candle is used for lighting.

The estimated cost of property damage was P1 million.

The affected residents are currently seeking shelter at the barangay gym.

Based on the initial report on the fire, 69 houses were destroyed in Kauswagan Basak Pardo affecting 135 families or 591 individuals while 41 houses were burned in Sto. Niño Kinasang-an affecting 56 families or 264 individuals.
