Bacoor wardens relieved

The Bacoor Custodial Center police supervisor and four other wardens were relieved Saturday following the escape of 23 detainees from the Cavite jail.

Administrative sanctions are also being readied against SPO3 Dominador Fermil, the supervisor, and the other jail officers for the Friday jailbreak, said Cavite Provincial Police Director Senior Supt. William Segun.

“Actually, all the duty officers at the time, the five of them, including the chief of the custodial center, had already been relieved of their posts and reassigned in the provincial office while they are being investigated for their appropriate liabilities,” Segun said in a radio interview Saturday.

As of 6 a.m. of Saturday, eight inmates have been recaptured following the intensified manhunt operations in the province, said the Cavite provincial.

Meanwhile, the Cavite Philippine National Police formed a special task group to conduct the manhunt against 15 inmates who remain at large, according to Segun.

The fugitives have drug-related cases, he said.

But Segun said the escapees were not high profile personalities but rather street-level pushers.

Police said the jail guard opened the prison to bring back a detainee who had just taken a mugshot, when the other inmates pushed him aside and made a run for it around 4:30 p.m. of Friday.

“The guard took the mugshot of the detainee while there are still visitors. When he returned him to the cell, that’s the time the other detainees pushed the door and ran. The guard was startled and failed to react,” Supt. Vicente Cabatinga, Bacoor City police chief, said.

Segun told media that when they conducted a head count, they realized that it was 23 and not 22 inmates who bolted out, contrary to earlier reports.

He said the jailbreak appears to have been planned since a detainee was already positioned at the entrance of the cell when the incident happened.

Police fired shots as they pursued those who escaped, he said.
