SBP puts FIBA issues on hold

The replacements for sanctioned members of Gilas Pilipinas have yet to be identified after the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas decided not to tackle it in a crucial Philippine Basketball Association board meeting yesterday.

According to SBP president Al Panlilio, they put the burning issue on hold to give way for more pressing matters like the formation of the squad that would represent the country in the 18th Asian Games next month.

“Regarding FIBA, there are no talks yet. We want to finish the issue of the Asian Games first,” said Panlilio, who is also the Meralco governor.

The SBP suddenly got embroiled in massive trouble after an ugly brawl between Gilas Pilipinas and Australia erupted during the third window of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifier early this month.

With that, a total of 10 players and two coaches in head coach Chot Reyes and Jong Uichico were sanctioned while the federation was told to hold its hosting of its second-round match against Qatar behind closed-doors.

A couple of Boomers like Chris Goulding and Nathan Sobey also threatened to come up with separate legal actions.

Panlilio said time is running out and they have to move fast as far as the Asian Games is concerned.

“We’ll finish this Asian Games first because we’re rushing as we said. Then, in due time we’ll share with you our next steps for the FIBA window.”

“But the Philippine Basketball Association is open to lend players again to Gilas pool to replace the ten players suspended.”

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said the league would always remain supportive of the SBP. In fact, they are just waiting for possible replacements for the suspended players.

“We’re only waiting for the SBP to submit names to assure the players’ availability and willingness,” said Marcial.
