Acaylar eyes Foton job

Veteran coach Sammy Acaylar declared willingness to serve as head coach of Foton following the resignation of John Abella midway into the Chooks to Go-Philippine Superliga Invitational Conference.

Acaylar, the former national men’s team head coach, said he already submitted his application and is looking forward to a meeting with Foton team owner Rommel Sytin to discuss his plans and program for the Tornadoes.

After serving as head coach of Sta. Lucia Realty, he took a hiatus to concentrate on the national team in the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur last year.

That break was further extended when University of Perpetual Help Dalta System appointed him as its athletic director aside from supervising its volleyball program.

Since the Altas are hosting the ongoing 93rd National Collegiate Athletic Association season, a lot of things are on Acaylar’s plate, prompting him to put his coaching career in the PSL on hold.

But now that everything is already running smoothly, he said he wants to give coaching in the most prestigious club league in the country another try.

“Yes, I’m interested. I feel that I can contribute to the success of Foton,�? said Acaylar, who was part of the national squad that won the gold medal in the 1993 SEA Games in Singapore.

The next conference will be very challenging for the Tornadoes.

After parting ways with Abella earlier this month, Foton is also set to lose star spiker Jaja Santiago while Bea de Leon still remains doubtful.

Santiago will be seeing action in the Japan V.Premier League in September while de Leon opted to play her final year at Ateneo de Manila University.

With that, Dindin Manabat, Maika Ortiz, Ivy Perez, Gyzelle Sy, CJ Rosario and Shaya Adorador have to work doubly hard to fill the void that Santiago and de Leon would be leaving.

Acaylar said he’s ready to take the job.

“Foton has a deep and very talented roster,�? said Acaylar, who is known as a good teacher and an excellent motivator.

“The talent is already there. You just have to squeeze it and turn this team into a solid, fighting unit.�?
