Calvo delivers for Letran

When Letran College needed a leader, it was JP Calvo who answered the call.

After the Knight’s humbling loss to University of Perpetual Help Dalta System on opening day of the National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament, head coach Jeff Napa insisted that his veterans should take command.

Calvo took that message to heart and quickly powered the Knights to an 83-76 win over San Sebastian College last Friday.

The reliable playmaker put up 16 points on a 6-of-11 field goal shooting while brilliantly dictating the tempo all game long.

With this offensive prowess and leadership, the NCAA Press Corps tapped him as its second Chooks to Go-Player of the Week.

“The good thing about this team is that we’re helping each other,” said Calvo after leading the attack of the Knights.

Napa said he reached out to Calvo and another veteran in Bong Quinto to discuss how they can steer the Knights into the right direction.

“I talked to these two veterans,” Napa said. “I made them realize the bigger picture. Fortunately, their teammates responded.”

Calvo deflected credits to his teammates.

“In the end, I will bank on my teammates,” said Calvo, who edged Quinto, Ian Alban and Levi Dela Cruz of Arellano University and Yankie Haruna of College of Saint Benilde for the weekly citation.
