LOS ANGELES, United States — The Oakland Athletics, poised for a playoff push in the second half of the Major League Baseball season, acquired right-handed relief pitcher Jeurys Familia from the New York Mets on Saturday.

The A’s sent 23-year-old prospect Will Toffey and minor league reliever Bobby Wahl to the Mets, who will also receive $1 million in international slot money in the deal — which adds that amount to the pot the Mets can spend on an international acquisition.

Former All-Star Familia joins standout rookie Lou Trivino and All-Star closer Blake Treinen in Oakland’s bullpen.

Trivino is 7-1 with a 1.22 earned-run-average while Treinen boasts 24 saves and a .94 ERA this season.

Familia, 28, has enjoyed resurgence in 2018 after a 2017 campaign in which he was banned for 15 games for a domestic violence incident in which he was accused of bruising the right cheek and scratching the chest of his wife, Bianca Rivas in 2016.

Charges were dropped after Rivas told authorities she didn’t wish to pursue the case, but Major League Baseball suspended Familia for the first 15 games of last season.

He then required surgery for an arterial clot in his right shoulder.

The trade ends a couple of days of suspense for Familia as trade talk swirled.

Mets manager Mickey Callaway was told midway through the club’s game against the New York Yankees on Friday not to use Familia because of a potential trade.

“Just waiting right now for my agent to call me and see what happens,” Familia said after exchanging hugs with teammates after the game.

Familia, who ranks third in Mets history with 123 career saves, posted 17 saves with a 2.88 ERA in 40 appearances for the last-placed Mets this season.
