Taxi driver robs OFW

A taxi driver who sped off with the valuables of an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) is facing robbery charges and revocation of his driver’s license after being collared by airport policemen.

The driver, Rodel Ormillo, was nabbed inside his house at Eastwind Homes in San Isidro, Rodriguez, Rizal on the strength of a complaint by OFW Catalina Prado filed before the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA).

A team of policemen led by AP Inspectors Roderick Mejia and Victor Mallari tracked down the driver of the white taxi (license plate ABQ 1130) after tracing the Queensmen unit he used.

All Queensmen taxi units had been, consequently, banned by MIAA General Manager Ed Monreal from picking up passengers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

“It makes me happy that we were able to help Ms. Prado. We assure the public that we are working very hard to rid NAIA of scalawags and ‘enterprising’ individuals no matter how challenging it is,” Monreal said.

A robbery complaint will be filed today by the OFW before the Pasay City Prosecutor’s Office, said the MIAA chief. The revocation of Ormillo’s license was filed at the Land Transportation Office.

“Our campaign is continuing and we value every complaint brought before us and we will do all we can to resolve them,” Monreal added.

Prado narrated that Ormillo dropped her and unloaded her baggage after she refused to pay a fixed fare of P1,700 from NAIA to Muntinlupa.

However, the taxi driver took off with her black bag containing her valuables which were later recovered from the suspect by the airport policemen who conducted a follow-up operation.

According to Prado, her black backpack contained five pairs of earrings, one gold necklace worth P30,000 and three pieces of watches valued at P25,000.

The team of Mejia and Mallari, including APO1 Marzel Pangda, APO1 Ismael Rivera and APO1 Dyron Candido together with complainant Prado, confronted Ormillo at his house.

The suspect initially denied taking the OFW’s bag but later on revealed he pawned the valuables.
