Parties have today to register

Those seeking to register political parties and coalitions for the 2019 midterm elections have until 5 p.m. to do so, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said yesterday.

The deadline was for July 15 but since it fell on a Sunday, the last day of registration was set for today by the Comelec pursuant to Resolution 10395.

Under Section 61, Article VIII of the Omnibus Election Code, any group of persons may register as a national or regional political party by submitting the Comelec a verified petition.

Also to be submitted to the Comelec are the constitution and by-laws, platforms of government and such other relevant information about the parties or coalitions seeking to be registered.

The Comelec shall then hold hearings and resolve the petitions within 10 days from the date of submission. Registration fee is P10,100.
