A feast of indie music

El Calle for the best OPM indie music. Resorts World Manila’s (RWM) El Calle Food and Music Hall is more than just another urban hangout. With acoustic performances from today’s most sought after Filipino pop music artists, music fans may just discover a pioneering act destined to break into the mainstream and become Filipino pop favorites.

On the El Calle radar this week are two top indie bands which have earned considerable following on social media, and the acoustic return of one of the most successful indie bands of the 2000’s.

On Wednesday, indie alternative standout Autotelic takes on the stage for an acoustic set filled with their alt-rock and dance originals. Having been featured with Sugarfree’s Ebe Dancel for the Coke Studio PH collaborations, Autotelic released their acclaimed debut album Papunta Pabalik in 2016 with the hits “Laro”, “Languyin” and “Gising.” In 2017, the band received the Best Performance by a New Group Recording Artist award for “Laro” from the 30th Aliw Awards.

El Calle then presents the eight-piece indie band Cheats on Thursday night. Releasing their self-titled debut album in 2016 and following up with Before the Babies in 2017, Cheats brought to the scene an upbeat celebratory sound that immediately appealed to many. On their breakout year, the band instantly found themselves performing alongside big-name international indie bands such as The 1975, CHVRCHES, and Flume in the 2016 Laneway Festival held in Singapore. Fans can catch Cheats perform their hit singles “Crumble,” “Talk,” and “Drunk,” among others.

Meanwhile, El Calle is set to stage a rocking acoustic Friday with the biggest headliner of the week Urbandub. The Cebu City indie rockers not only made a name for themselves locally with such hits as “Evidence,” “The Fight is Over,” and “First of Summer,” but also made waves in Southeast Asia. Having released six studio albums and garnering multiple awards, Urbandub’s Gabby Alipe and John Dinopol are back to perform their brand of alternative-experimental rock that made them a household name in the local indie scene since the early 2000s.
