Abueva suspension stays

CALVIN ABUEVA Calvin Abueva will remain suspended by his team– for now.

Alaska head coach Alex Compton emphasized that they have no plans of lifting Abueva’s suspension following a 74-89 setback to Meralco in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner’s Cup last Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Compton said he remains supportive to Abueva. But he said he couldn’t help him with his reinstatement as the decision to suspend him indefinitely from the team came from the Alaska management.

Abueva showed up in the weekly training of Gilas Pilipinas at the Meralco gym last week, sparking speculations that he is fit and ready to return to play after battling some personal problems.

The Nationals are preparing for the third window of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers against Chinese Taipei and Australia, respectively.

Still, Compton said there’s no positive development as far as his suspension is concerned.

“The word hasn’t changed. Indefinite means indefinite,” said Compton.

“It means not forever. ‘Maybe’ that’s what it means.”

Abueva was slapped with an indefinite suspension by no less than Alaska team owner Fred Uytengsu after going incommunicado following their game against Globalport last June 2.

The fiery forward missed a total of four games due to the suspension.

Compton, however, assured that he would reach out to the management to discuss Abueva’s suspension.

“We’ll see as I talk to the management,” said Compton, whose wards hold a share of second spot with a 7-2 win-loss card and in a perfect position to claim one of the two twice-to-beat incentives in the quarterfinals.
