Longest day, shortest night

THE Philippines experienced on Thursday, June 21, its longest day and consequently its shortest night for 2018, according to weather forecasters.

The extended day time was due to the summer solstice which the weather bureau PAGASA pegged at 6:07 p.m. of Thursday.

PAGASA said the summer solstice is the time when the sun attains its greatest declination of +23.5 degrees and passes directly overhead at noon at latitude 23.5 degrees north, known as the Tropic of Cancer.

The summer solstice is in contrast with the December winter solstice where the country experiences longer nights and shorter days.
