Marano volley team captain

Aby Marano of F2 Logistics was appointed team captain of the national women’s volleyball team headed for the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta this August.

Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. vice president Peter Cayco made the announcement Sunday night, saying Marano’s leadership, competitive stance and vast international experience make her perfect for the job.

It’s going to be Marano’s first time to serve as skipper of the national team after seeing action in the past two editions of the Southeast Asian Games on top of a handful of Asian championships.

She was supposed to captain the team for the AVC Asian Senior Women’s Championship in 2015. But she bolted out the team to join the SEA Games squad.

“I think Aby is perfect for the position,” said Cayco, following a thorough deliberation with national team head coach Shaq Delos Santos and deputies Kungfu Reyes and Brian Esquibel.

“She has the leadership, the passion and the experience to lead this team. I’m sure it there will be no adjustment period as all of her teammates are looking up to her.”

She said she’s willing to reach out to guide her younger teammates, especially those without international experience like MJ Philips, Rebecca Rivera, Mylene Paat and Majoy Baron.

“Playing for the national team has been my childhood dream. Being chosen as team captain is such a big honor,” said Marano, who is known for her fiery attitude in and out the court.

“I accept this responsibility wholeheartedly. I thank God because all I was asking was pan de sal, yet He gave me a burger. This is such a wonderful blessing,” she said.

LVPI is set to announce the final composition of the national squad either today or tomorrow.

They are also set to see action as a guest team in the Philippine Superliga (PSL) Invitational Conference starting June 23.
