‘Domeng’ now a typhoon; monsoon rains to persist

Tropical Storm “Domeng,” with internationl name Maliksi, yesterday intensified into a typhoon as it left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), the state weather bureau said.

In a bulletin issued 9:30 a.m. yesterday, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Typhoon Domeng was already 1,045 kilometers east northeast of Basco, Batanes, moving northeast at a faster 37 kilometers per hour from the previous 32 km per hour.

The weather bureau said Domeng now has maximum winds of 120 km/h from the previous 100 km/h and gustiness of up to 145 km/h from the previous 120 km/h.

PAGASA said since the typhoon moved upward the entire time it was inside PAR, it did not make landfall in any part of the Philippines.

It added that even though Domeng has left PAR, it continues to enhance the southwest monsoon or hanging habagat.

PAGASA said the enhanced southwest monsoon will trigger more moderate to heavy rain in Luzon until early next week that might trigger flashfloods and landslides.

It also warned that sea travel is still risky in the northern and eastern seaboards of Northern Luzon, the seaboards of Central Luzon, and the western and southern seaboards of Southern Luzon.
