Comelec gun ban starts August

The Commission on Elections over the weekend announced that the imposition of the gun ban will start on 28 August and will run until 29 November in connection with the synchronized Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections on 30 October.

In resolution 10918 the Comelec said carrying and transporting of firearms outside of residence is to be prohibited.

“During the election period, no person shall bear, carry or transport firearms or other deadly weapons in public places, including any building, street, park, private vehicle or public conveyance even if licensed to possess or carry the same, unless authorized by the Commission,” the Comelec resolution read.

Comelec also suspends the issuance of firearm licenses.

Uniform personnel, like members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police are exempted provided they must be in full uniform, showing clearly and eligibly their name and rank and serial numbers.

Comelec added that candidates for public office including incumbent officials seeking public office shall not engage the service of bodyguards.
