Blu Girls near bronze

The national squad gets a handsome chance of clinching the bronze meal entering its last two matches in the Women’s Softball Asia Cup at the Songdo LNG Stadium in Incheon, South Korea.
After meeting with coaches and match officials on Wednesday, Blu Girls head coach Randy Dizer said organizers opted to scrap the semifinals due bad weather.
Instead, the top two teams after the eliminations will battle for the gold medal while the third and fourth squads will slug it out for the bronze.
Right now, Japan is on top with 6-0 win-loss slate while China and Chinese Taipei are at second and third spots with 5-1 and 4-1 cards, respectively.
The Philippines, for its part, is at fourth with 4-2, just one game ahead of the host country with 3-3.
Should the Blu Girls prevail in their last elimination round game against India on Thursday at 12 p.m. (Manila time), they will tighten their grip on the fourth spot and seal a slot in the XVII WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup this July in Europe.
“There will be no more semifinals. The No. 1 and No. 2 teams will play in the finals while the No. 3 team plays No. 4 for the bronze,” Dizer said in a phone conversation.
“We just finished our meeting. The competition changes were announced there.”
Dizer said although the South Koreans still have a chance to sneak in the top four should they win over Singapore on Thursday and Japan on Friday, he believes that the Blu Girls have an inside track following their 2-0 victory over the hosts last Sunday.
“Looking at each team, Korea is the toughest team on the teams that we need to win. That’s why we concentrated on beating Korea on the first day because they’re a threat at fourth place,” Dizer said.
“What we want for our girls is for their skills to go higher as their level of competition goes high as well.”
