Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte on Friday honored the traffic enforcer who sacrificed his life to save a pedestrian from being run over by a loaded trailer truck along Bonifacio Avenue, Wednesday afternoon.

“We salute the bravery and heroism of Traffic Enforcer Jeffrey Antolin of our Quezon City Traffic and Transport Management Department,” Belmonte said in a statement. “Antolin went above and beyond the call of duty.”

Antolin, 35, was directing the heavy flow of traffic when a crossing pedestrian was almost hit by the truck which failed to follow his hand signals, according to a police report.

The victim quickly reacted by pushing the pedestrian out of harm’s way; but unfortunately, he was hit and run over by the trailer truck.

Antolin was pulled from under the truck and rushed to MCU Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The truck driver, Joel Dimacali of Tondo, Manila, was booked for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.

Belmonte said Dimacali “will be held accountable and penalized to the fullest extent of the law.”

“The Quezon City Government condoles with the family and loved ones of Antolin and will provide all the needed assistance during this time of loss and grief,” the Mayor said.

“The supreme sacrifice and heroism of Antolin serve as an inspiration to everyone in the Quezon City Government,” Belmonte said.

“We thank him and his family for his service to the people of Quezon City,” she added.
