The governor of Wyoming jumped the gun on a Texas court hearing a petition to ban mifepristone by signing on Friday a law prohibiting the abortion pill in the US state.
“I believe all life is sacred and that every individual, including the unborn, should be treated with dignity and compassion,” conservative Governor Mark Gordon said in a letter Friday evening to the secretary of state, Agence France-Presse reported.
Gordon is moving further from banning the abortion pill by calling on local lawmakers to totally ban abortion in the state constitution subject to a referendum.
Gordon’s ban comes as a federal courtroom in Texas is expected to decide imminently on a possible national ban on the widely used abortion pill approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration more than a decade ago and has been legally available for years.
Texas judge Matthew Kacsmaryk could order the abortion pill taken off the market across the country.
