PNVF recruits 3 Fil-Ams, Brazilian coach

Three Filipino-American spikers will reinforce the men’s volleyball team while a Brazilian strategist will call the shots when the country vies in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Phnom Penh in May.

The Philippine National Volleyball Federation said yesterday that Steven Rotter, Michael Vicente and Cyrus de Guzman will be added to the squad while Sergio Veloso, who used to coach Maldives’ men’s team, will replace interim coach Odjie Mamon.

Rotter played for Cal State while Vicente suited up for Concordia University Irvine and De Guzman wore the Hunter College jersey in New York.

Veloso, a FIVB consultant, is looking forward to man the bench and steer the Philippines to a podium finish in Phnom Penh.

“The most important thing is to give your 110 percent… You need to prove yourself on the court. I need to know that I’m hard on the techniques because if you have a very good technique, you will have good ball control and you prevent injuries,” Veloso said.

In Hanoi last year, the Philippines placed fifth.

Meanwhile, the PNVF signed a partnership with Foton Philippines with general manager Levy Santos raving about the tieup.

“We are very proud to be a partner with PNVF. Looking forward to having more activities in the future,” Santos said.
