OPAPRU: Gabriela’s accusations baseless, irresponsible

The Office of the Presidential Advisor on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity on Saturday said it shares the same direction as President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s administration’s goal of eliminating and preventing the proliferation of fake news, particularly on social media.

OPAPRU Undersecretary Wilben Mayor made the statement in a media briefing in Quezon City after Gabriela Women’s Party accused some members of OPAPRU of abducting and coercing Gabriela Partylist Marikina chapter president Elizabeth Maynigo.

Mayor underscored that there is a process for validating and verifying complaints properly.

He added that the agency immediately conducted internal checking when the allegation broke out on social media “to ferret out the truth.”

The agency belied the accusation of Gabriela Partylist, saying the alleged harassment incident was “baseless, irresponsible and unfounded claims.”

OPAPRU made this statement after Gabriela Partylist slammed the agency when a member of a group, who introduced themselves as OPAPRU personnel, allegedly harassed and intimidated Maynigo on Thursday.

“We in Gabriela Women’s Party condemn the harassment and intimidation committed by alleged members of the against Elizabeth Maynigo, long-time women’s rights defender and Gabriela Partylist — Marikina president,” the women’s group wrote in its Facebook post on 17 March, which has already circulated through several platforms in social media.

In response, the agency said: “To set the record straight, the OPAPRU vehemently denies that it was involved in the alleged harassment of Ms. Maynigo.”
