Letran College pulled off an upset after a 21-25, 25-16, 21-25, 25-20, 15-10 win over Arellano University in Season 98 National Collegiate Athletic Association women’s volleyball tournament yesterday at the San Andres Sports Complex.
Judiel Nitura, Cha Cuñada and Rizel Tapang all scored 15 points each as the Lady Knights not only ended their campaign on a high note with a 5-4 win-loss record, but also eliminated the Lady Chiefs from Final Four for the first time since 2012.
Letran’s conquest also allowed Lyceum of the Philippines University and Mapua University to enter the Final Four and join early birds Saint Benilde and University of Perpetual Help.
Trailing 7-14 in the fifth and final set, an attack error from the Lady Knights capped a three-points swing for the Lady Chiefs, giving hope to their campaign.
But a crosscourt kill from Nitura ended the match, sealing the win for Letran.
Lady Knights head coach Mike Inoferio said this win is a gift for his wards as they look forward to the next season.
“This is a present to my players and a memory they will bring moving forward,” said Inoferio, who will miss the services of Cuñada, Kath de la Cruz, Edma Ann Musngi, and team captain Sahreena Urmeneta.
Rookie Laika Tudlasan and Angelique Padillon scored 15 points each as the squad wound up its bid with a 4-4 card.
