Immaculada Concepcion College flaunted its might as it clobbered Philippine Merchant Marine School, 85-73, while PATTS-College of Aeronautics sent reigning champion Centro Escolar University crashing in the National Capital Region Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament Wednesday at the Olivarez College Gym in Parañaque City.
Alfred Flores was red-hot, firing five three-pointers to finish with 17 points to help the Blue Hawks sink the Mariners and grab the solo lead with their third straight victory.
But the Seahorses overshadowed ICC’s impressive win by pulling off a tough 69-65 triumph over powerhouse Scorpions.
The Scorpions opened up their season with an 88-64 dumping of Polytechnic University of the Philippines a few days ago and extended their winning run stretching back to the previous season when they posted an 11-game sweep en route to the championship.
But the Seahorses cut short their string of victories with an inspired performance anchored on Genesis Unas, who had a double-double performance of 18 points and 10 rebounds, and a late-game heroics from Jexter Po.
Po tallied 11 markers, including five in the crucial stretch that touched off the Seahorses’ big finishing kick.
Marjun Wahing also had a big game, coming away with 17 markers for PATTS.
Returning member PUP nipped newcomer St. Dominic College, 81-80, in a thrilling finale that was decided by a crucial three-point basket by Mark Nobleza in the last four seconds.
Shan Azurin of the Pikemen could only split his charity shots in the last eight seconds, leaving the door open for the Radicals of PUP to map up the play coming off a time out.
The pass was nearly picked up by the Pikemen coming off an inbound play, but went to the hands of Matthew Tambong, who sent it back to the inbounding Nobleza for the game-winning trey.
