Another super rookie has been making waves in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament.
Adamson University freshman Trisha Tubu made her presence felt with an outstanding performance that powered her team to back-to-back wins in the second week of intense collegiate volleyball action.
Her power and scoring prowess helped lift the Lady Falcons to second spot tied with defending champion National University and just behind league-leading and unbeaten De La Salle University.
The neophyte winger posted an average of 18.0 points per game in Adamson’s twin victories – enough to earn the Collegiate Press Corps UAAP Player of the Week presented by San Miguel Corporation and Philippine Sports Commission with MNL Kingpin, Tinapayan Festival, and Jockey as minor sponsors.
Tubu, thus, became the second rookie to get the citation after De La Salle University prized recruit Angel Canino, who had a solid debut week.
Tubu, who has been creating buzz since her stint with the Lady Falcons in the offseason, poured in 13 points, highlighted by three blocks, in their surprisingly comfortable 25-15, 25-17, 25-19 win over University of Santo Tomas last 8 March.
The Lady Falcons followed it up with an emphatic pummeling of skidding Ateneo de Manila University, 25-18, 25-23, 25-19, last Sunday to extend their winning run to three.
Tubu was once again relentless in offense, hammering 22 attacks in just 39 attempts for a 23-point performance against the Blue Eagles.
Despite the already impressive outings, the Lady Falcon teased that there is more to expect from her as the season progresses.
“We just enjoyed the game. My coaches and teammates are always reminding me to just play my game and believe that I could do more. That’s what they always say to me,” Tubu said after their win over Ateneo.
Even Adamson head coach Jerry Yee had nothing but praises for the talented rookie. Yee even issued a stern warning to other teams about Tubu.
“Better watch out, she’s just a rookie,” Yee quipped.
“She still has a lot of playing years. I’m very happy she came back to help us out. She’s a big help,” Yee added about the Adamson high school product.
Tubu outshone teammate Kate Santiago, NU’s Alyssa Solomon and Sheena Toring, and La Salle’s Thea Gagate and Angel Canino for the weekly citation given by sportswriters from the country’s leading print and online publications covering the beat.
