Oscars nominations 2023
Everything Everywhere All at Once, a gloriously messy film by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (collectively known as the Daniels), led the nominations for the 95th Academy Awards on Tuesday morning, picking up 11 nods.
It was followed by the film adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s World War I landmark novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, and Martin McDonagh’s tragicomedy about friends who end their friendship with alarming consequences in The Banshees of Inisherin, with nine nominations each.
These three films are also nominated for Best Picture alongside sequels that are both box office juggernauts: Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick. Other films included in this category are Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic Elvis, Todd Field’s Tár, Sarah Polley’s Women Talking, Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, and Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or winning entry Triangle of Sadness.
This season also sees comeback performances from actors Brendan Fraser who’s nominated for Best Actor playing a morbidly obese man trying to reconcile with his daughter in The Whale, and Ke Huy Quan for Best Supporting Actor, as a naïve husband navigating the multiverse in Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Surprisingly, acclaimed performances by actors Viola Davis (The Woman King), Brad Pitt (Babylon), and Dolly de Leon (Triangle of Sadness) failed to get nominations.
Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel is set to return as emcee. This marks his third after hosting in 2017 and 2018. The 95th Oscars will be held on Sunday, 12 March, at the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood and will be televised on ABC.
