BBM: Importance of barangay health workers beyond debate

Marcos said BHWs are important sources of information in crafting policy decisions with their presence at the grassroots level

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday recognized barangay health workers in their fight against Covid-19 during his meeting with leaders of the Barangay Health and Wellness party list at Malacañang Palace.

The BHW party list advocates for the welfare of barangay health workers and provides them and their families with medical, educational, and burial assistance. Marcos noted that the passage of the Magna Carta for Barangay Health Workers should lift their morale.

“I’m also happy to say, I was with the Presidential Legislative Liaison Office yesterday (24 January) and among the laws that were already passed was the Magna Carta for Barangay Health Workers (in the lower house). It’s a big help,” he told the BHW party-list leaders.

“We can never argue the importance of barangay health workers and for that matter all the volunteers at the barangay level and the BHW, especially now that there are many disasters, we know we can always count on BHW.”

The Magna Carta for Barangay Health Workers is one of the House bills approved on the third reading at the House of Representatives.

The President cited the major role that BHWs played at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. They led the government in providing services, conducting house-to-house visits, and deciding who among the population had to be sent to hospitals and isolation facilities, he said.
