Thirty jail guards at the New Bilibid Prison had been suspended by Bureau of Corrections officer-in-charge Gregorio Catapang Jr. for allegedly making a killing from money transfers made to persons deprived of liberty by their relatives.

Catapang said the suspension is to allow the conduct of an impartial investigation against the 30 on whose lockers were allegedly seized P300,000.

On Monday, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said the scheme was discovered when they were determining if the P70-a-day food budget of each PDL is being used for their nourishment.

Remulla said they found out that money is being sent to PDLs by their relatives to augment their food intake.
